Chinese New Year

This year the Chinese new year falls on 8th February. I got acquainted with this festival while I was living in Singapore. The whole island would come alive with beautiful red decorations and  every once in a while the loud sounds of cymbals would reverberate around the town signaling a dragon dance. The mouth watering pineapple tarts and the sales used to add to the fun. For the Chinese, this was a time to bond with their families and for us it was vacation time. We always planned a trip outside Singapore because the whole island used to shut down for 4 days. There was a lot of excitement and joy in the air and it wasn't difficult to sense it.
 Sigh! Good ol' memories!

And to refresh those memories, I created a fun learning pack for little ones. I enjoyed making this unit, and I am sure the little ones will enjoy doing the activities as much.

Halloween-Friday Fine Motor Activity Fun

This Friday, I am sharing cutting strips (Halloween Theme) for your little ones. All you need is a child friendly scissor and the printable of the cutting strips which you can download from HERE.

  Sorry about the picture being upside down! Sometimes blogger gets very stubborn with regards to images. ;)

Cutting strips of paper with a scissor is great for developing fine motor skills. You don't have to give children directed lines to cut. Simply put scrap paper out for them and let them cut the paper. You can even let them cut play dough with scissors to begin with.

If you are introducing scissors for the first time to your child you can use this fun chant which I found on  TPT.

So grab the free printable and let kids have fun cutting.

Dinosaur Ideas

My Dinosaur unit is ready for all you guys out there! It has literacy, math and science activities and is full of hands on learning.

Alphabet Activities

Summer break is a great time to unwind and relax, to catch up with family and friends,  to go on a holiday and basically just chill(ie if you can in the hot weather). And for kids its no different, it simply means enjoyment and fun. But its also that time of the year when there is a substantial learning loss. So how do we get the kids to engage in some constructive learning  without making them feel like the kid below?

I have listed 5 great activities that you can do at home with your little kiddos to revise/revisit/introduce the alphabet without making your kids feel that they are studying.

They are all hand-on activities which would hardly consume your child's valuable break yet provide the learning which would give them a head start when school reopens.

1) DOWNLOAD this freebie and see if your child can place letters in an order. You only need a set of magnetic letters for this activity. 

2) GRAB this alphabet game and let your child turn into a little letter detective. You require a dice to play this game.

 

3) Let your child observe things around his/her environment and go on a letter scavenger hunt.

End Of School Year

The school year is about to come to an end for most of you out there and the excitement to welcome the summer break is surely in the air!

I know this feeling so well, but hang on, don't give up! I can hear the summer birds chirping right in my ear...

But no matter how run out one feels , this is the most nostalgic time of the year and its always difficult to let go of those cute munchkins that one has spent the entire year with.

With a little planning, we can avoid the year end burn out. I have created a pack with some essential stuff that every teacher likes to use at the end of the year.

Start a countdown before the last 10 days of school.

Cut apart the number cards and attach them to a ribbon. Everyday remove one card and see how many more days are left in school.

Award your kids with these cute certificates.

Fill out a memory page about kindergarten. 

To build excitement about the new grade, ask children what they would like to learn in grade 1. Share their work with their grade 1 teachers. It would help them to know a bit about the kids.

Discuss summer plans with the children. Initiate a discussion using the interactive chart.

Read the emergent reader: "In the summer..."

 

Do a summer craft. Ask children to draw what they would like to do in the summers.

Ask them to write what they enjoy most about summers.
