Addition fun with frogs!

I was going through some of my old posts and found a frog game that I used to play in my class quite often to teach children count on and addition and I realized that I haven't done a post on numeracy for a long time. So I took some inspiration from that game and created a fun pack to practice addition with frogs.

Dinosaur Activities

I didn't expect the dinosaur unit to be such a hit with kids though I knew that it would definitively hit the right cord!
We have been reading a lot of fun books on dinosaurs but our favorite turned out to be "Stomp, Dinosaur, Stomp" by Margaret Mayo.

The book has a lot of cute dinosaur pictures which exposes the children to various dinosaurs.

We used a page from the book to match toy dinosaurs.

We made huge dinosaur feet. I got the template from HERE.

Since the kids are learning sight words, I decided to add a sight word activity to the dinosaur theme.
I cut few colored pipe cleaners(pretend dinosaur bones) and put them in dough. The kids had to search for dinosaur bones and match the colored bones to the correct sight word(the sight words were of the same colors as the pipe cleaners).

And math couldn't be left behind, so I found a fun addition activity from 3 dinosaurs.com to add to our unit.

We also did a lot of craft and writing activities, which I would be sharing soon.

Math- Addition Fun

I didn't realize that a simple counting song could be used to teach children addition in such a fun way till i started working on the activities. My intention was just to make an 'add one more to a number' book but it got me thinking and i made few more activities for differentiated work for those smartie pants which can be found in all classrooms.

Sing the song "5 little astronauts" which you can download from Spelloutloud.com.

Get the kids to practice this song by using the adorable astronaut puppets.

Then sing the first paragraph and ask them how many astronauts went out to play. Give them a chance to mentally calculate in their head. Once they are ready, print the book and let them practice adding one more to each number.

Give this laminated sheet to make number combinations up to 5, to kids who are ready to do more.

Use these in the math center and let children explore different ways to make numbers. Give cutouts of astronaut cards and let them make different combinations.

Cut apart these rocket cards. They are from 2 to 5. Let children find all the correct number combination cards for the rocket.

All the above activities can be found in this PACK.
