Rhyming with Ten Apples up on Top!

Splat those delicious apples! We read the adorable book "Ten Apples up on Top" By Dr Seuss and couldn't resist making these yummy, deep red and soft apples. Ok! they are not edible but they turned out so nice, that I actually wanted to take a bite out of them. I got my inspiration from SUGAR AUNTS!

 Now I am going to deviate a bit and talk about mentioning or giving credit to people from whom you take inspiration. All it takes is a few words and social media has made that job so easy for us. Even if you don't want to stress the muscles of your mouth by saying that "I loved your activity" to the person concerned, you can only press few buttons on your keyboard and type a few words and let them know. Easy Peasy! Somehow I never get why people find it difficult to appreciate. After all, teachers learn from other teachers. You don't lose anything by expressing your gratitude!

Enough said on that. Back to the apples. All you need is flour and water and some red food colouring. Mix them all up and throw in some cotton balls. Let children mix and bake them in an oven for an hour.

Add some pipe cleaners and leaves. I just made holes in the leaves and passed the pipe cleaner from it. Then pressed it on the baked apple.

Now start the game.Print out the rhyming cards. The words are from the book “Ten Apples up on Top!” By Dr Seuss.

Encourage children to tell you a word that rhymes with the word on the card. If they come up with a correct word, let them take an apple from the basket and splat the apple. Whoever splats the maximum apples, is the winner.

I loved how this game out. It was pure fun and  great learning time for kids. Printable of the game coming soon.

Dr Seuss's Cat In The Hat Free Rhyming Sheets!

It's Dr Seuss's birthday today and I love using this day as an excuse to read some of his famous books all over again. His writing is full of rhyming and his books make a great read not only for kids but for adults as well. And his books always have such sweet inspirational lines that can lift even the dullest of spirits.

Rhyming with Cat In The Hat!

 Dr Seuss's birthday is around the corner and I am so excited to share rhyming sheets based on his popular book, 'Cat In The Hat". He was an American writer and illustrator who has penned over 60 popular children's book and I personally adore his work in 'Cat In The Hat', 'Wacky Wednesday' and 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas!'

The kids always get hooked on to his books because of their rhyming nature. And as educators, we all know that  rhyming is such an essential skill for emergent readers.Read my posts on RHYMING to know more.

And my newest pack will help to develop that indispensable rhyming skill in children in a fun way.

There are 25 CVC word family activity sheets in there. Children have to cut and paste the words that rhyme with the given word family.

 

They can even color the hats like the one in the story or with different colors, thus  working on their  patterning skills. 

Don't we teachers love it when we can work on multiple skills simultaneously?:)

Gratitude

I put up the above image on a lighter vein but i was driven to write this post on gratitude because some times you encounter people who never appreciate others but believe that every benefit received by them is a right.
But then again,these same people also make you reflect and ponder on some important values which can change our lives and outlook. Gratitude is one such value. Every experience, good or bad teaches you a lesson. And if you practice gratitude in your life then you can extract something good even from a bad experience. Because gratitude teaches you not only to be thankful but other values like optimism, compassion and forgiveness too.

So can we instill this value in little children? 

 Of course! But it is not a one day activity since gratitude is much more than just saying thank you.

 Books provide a great start and I stumbled upon some on Amazon. So grab the ones you like because its always good to start early on in life.

Another amazing book on bears by Karma Wilson! In this book, she talks about celebrating and sharing with friends and family.

One of my favorite authors- Mercer Mayer! In a world of consumerism,comes this great book that reminds us of things which money can't buy.

In this new adventure, Splat says thank you for all fun he has had with his mouse friend-Seymour.

I cannot leave out Dr Seuss books when i am sharing my favorite books. His trademark rhymes and illustrations will surly make all readers realize how lucky they are.

Don't wait for thanksgiving to talk about the importance of appreciating others. Show the kids this video and brainstorm things that they are thankful for.

Use this activity sheet to help children put their thoughts on paper.


Talk to children about the things they have like toys, books, friends, a house to live in etc. Teach them the difference between needs and wants.


Appreciate small things in life. Show gratitude to people from whom you have learnt something. Send out thank you notes to people who love and care for you.
