Rhyming with Ten Apples up on Top!

Splat those delicious apples! We read the adorable book "Ten Apples up on Top" By Dr Seuss and couldn't resist making these yummy, deep red and soft apples. Ok! they are not edible but they turned out so nice, that I actually wanted to take a bite out of them. I got my inspiration from SUGAR AUNTS!

 Now I am going to deviate a bit and talk about mentioning or giving credit to people from whom you take inspiration. All it takes is a few words and social media has made that job so easy for us. Even if you don't want to stress the muscles of your mouth by saying that "I loved your activity" to the person concerned, you can only press few buttons on your keyboard and type a few words and let them know. Easy Peasy! Somehow I never get why people find it difficult to appreciate. After all, teachers learn from other teachers. You don't lose anything by expressing your gratitude!

Enough said on that. Back to the apples. All you need is flour and water and some red food colouring. Mix them all up and throw in some cotton balls. Let children mix and bake them in an oven for an hour.

Add some pipe cleaners and leaves. I just made holes in the leaves and passed the pipe cleaner from it. Then pressed it on the baked apple.

Now start the game.Print out the rhyming cards. The words are from the book “Ten Apples up on Top!” By Dr Seuss.

Encourage children to tell you a word that rhymes with the word on the card. If they come up with a correct word, let them take an apple from the basket and splat the apple. Whoever splats the maximum apples, is the winner.

Rhyming with Cat In The Hat!

 Dr Seuss's birthday is around the corner and I am so excited to share rhyming sheets based on his popular book, 'Cat In The Hat". He was an American writer and illustrator who has penned over 60 popular children's book and I personally adore his work in 'Cat In The Hat', 'Wacky Wednesday' and 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas!'

The kids always get hooked on to his books because of their rhyming nature. And as educators, we all know that  rhyming is such an essential skill for emergent readers.Read my posts on RHYMING to know more.

And my newest pack will help to develop that indispensable rhyming skill in children in a fun way.

There are 25 CVC word family activity sheets in there. Children have to cut and paste the words that rhyme with the given word family.

 

They can even color the hats like the one in the story or with different colors, thus  working on their  patterning skills. 

Don't we teachers love it when we can work on multiple skills simultaneously?:)

Alphabet Activities for Preschoolers

My newest alphabet pack is ready and it is perfect for three to four year olds who are just starting to explore the abstract world of letters. 

The pack has alphabet posters which are fantastic for a visual stimulus. Just hang them in your classrooms or put them in a binder for little ones to look at. 

In this pack, the focus is on uppercase letters for the simple reason that they are easy to form. I am totally on the side of educators who feel that stress should be laid on lowercase letters because that's what children see most in print when reading but if your child is learning letters for the first time, capital letters makes sense. The little fingers need to first learn to form their straight lines and slanting lines before moving on to curves.

The pack  has simple writing sheets which your kids will enjoy doing as the space is not limited.

And for that phonological awareness skill, there are rhymes for each letter. Just print and sing! You could ask children to listen for rhyming words or if they are ready, words beginning with a particular letter.

Books that promote rhyming

 As an educator i feel that books add a lot of value to any lesson that one teaches. So after you have finished singing rhyming songs, doing fun activities, its time to get out those books and just have fun reading them aloud to your kids.

There are numerous books on rhyming but i am only going to list my 5 favorite.

     

 

This book is a must have for any educator.Your class library will be incomplete without this fantastic book. I use this book at the beginning of the year to recap letter sounds with my kinder kids but my kids love the book so much that it keeps coming out through the year.

Who doesn't love Eric Carle? And any animal book has to be a hit amongst kids. A very simple read , children will enjoy retelling the story using puppets.

I don't have to say anything about this book. All Dr Seuss books are known for their rhyming text. Though a word of caution, this book can be a little long if you have a restless bunch!

This book has great illustrations and will definitely bring a lot of laughter in your classroom. Your young readers are going to have fun reading about the adventure of the Moose on the loose.

This silly story about a woman who loves to wash everything will elicit giggles from your young ones. It is a colorful book with lots of rhyming which you would love to read again and again.

Rhyming activities

This post is a continuation of my old post why is rhyming important ? Children love rhyming and doing fun activities to promote rhyming only enhances their love for it. So after you have done the singing bit, what else can you do? Below, i have listed a few activities that i know for sure will be a hit with the kiddos. Yup! they are tried and tested, so go ahead and do them without a hitch.

Rhyme Go Fish!

This game is great for emerging readers and is best played in a small group.

To play the game, put all the cards upside down. Each player takes five cards.

Player one asks another player, "Do you have a word that rhymes with cat?"

If the player has the word, he will hand it to the first player. If not, he will say, Nope! Go Fish! Play continues until the first player has no cards in his hand.

These activities will not consume too much of your class time but can be incorporated through the day as filler activities.

 Phonological awareness is an integral part of literacy and these small steps to develop it, can't be missed. I was fortunate to attend a wonderful workshop on reading and gained a deeper understanding of why such activities are essential for a good reading foundation.
