Alphabet Activities for Preschoolers

My newest alphabet pack is ready and it is perfect for three to four year olds who are just starting to explore the abstract world of letters. 

The pack has alphabet posters which are fantastic for a visual stimulus. Just hang them in your classrooms or put them in a binder for little ones to look at. 

In this pack, the focus is on uppercase letters for the simple reason that they are easy to form. I am totally on the side of educators who feel that stress should be laid on lowercase letters because that's what children see most in print when reading but if your child is learning letters for the first time, capital letters makes sense. The little fingers need to first learn to form their straight lines and slanting lines before moving on to curves.

The pack  has simple writing sheets which your kids will enjoy doing as the space is not limited.

And for that phonological awareness skill, there are rhymes for each letter. Just print and sing! You could ask children to listen for rhyming words or if they are ready, words beginning with a particular letter.

Wednesday Book Talk- Moon activities

This Wednesday i am sharing another fantastic book on space. "On the Moon" by Anna Milbourne! I love this book because of its simplicity and it explains a lot of  moon facts in a super easy way. With big and bold illustrations, this book is great if you are introducing moon to the children. 

We follow it up with an art activity. I mix flour and white paint to give the paint a little texture and let children paint the moon surface.

Some writing has to be thrown in for the older kids! They record moon facts that they learn from the book.

I made a model to explain how the moon gets its light and why it looks different everyday. You can click on  the LINK to get the instructions for this model.

I love food and and using food to teach concepts gets me pretty excited. And let me tell you, the excitement rubs on the the kids too. So we got some Oreo biscuits and carved out moon shapes. And of course, we ate them all after we finished. ;)

The kids discovered why the moon is full of craters with a simple experiment. You only need some rocks and a bowl of flour for this experiment

 Let the kids drop the rocks and see what happens. Explain that moon doesn't have an atmosphere like Earth to protect it from space rocks. They enter the moon easily and hence the craters.

I added a literacy activity in this unit too. The astronaut has to reach the moon by following the alphabetical order.

And Math cannot be left behind, so a little addition practice took place with this game. Cut 5 rockets and 5 moons. Stick them back to back and put them in a bowl. Let the children shake the bowl and roll out the pieces. They make combinations and record it in their sheets. I got this idea long time back from a blog but can't remember the name. Attention Grabbers

A good book, a hot cup of coffee and some rain showers can definitely brighten a dull and dreary day. 

Considering  it was just the first day of the summer break, my spirits should have been more elevated but the quietness and  tranquility in the classroom didn't give me any pleasure,much to my dismay. And if i ramble about how i was on the verge of a dramatic outburst last week for all the noise that the kids were making in the class, people will think i need to be in an asylum. I so wanted to stand on top of the table and scream my lungs out to quieten the noise , but my sanity caught the better of me and i decided to calm myself by taking the 3 magical deep breaths. The kids are trying really hard to get a hang of the things in class and some days are fantastic but some are plain annoying.

So i decided to gather my act together and came up with the quiet spray! My kiddos sure loved getting sprayed with the magical air which reminds them to remain quiet.

I also introduced them to the noise level chart, though it was referred to almost after every 15 minutes in a day. I downloaded the chart from Kinder Kid.

I do a lot of songs during transition time to catch their attention. But i was forgetting most of the ones i use. So i decided to write them all up and made a copy for my class. The kids like to sing different ones so it can be difficult to remember all. Most of the chants are from Dr Jean. I also found some good ones by Nicole Bunt from 1st grade Owls. I picked the ones i liked and put them all together. I want to give a shout out to my self  for doing this ! HOORAY !
