Earth Day Unit!

It sounds ironical but as I am growing older I  think I  am becoming attention deficit. My wavering focus and fickle mind is surely not helping me to concentrate on one thing. I say that because I so excitedly started work on my bee unit for which I had some fabulous ideas but then when I got up today morning, I had this great desire to create something for Earth Day. So the bee unit when on the back burner and am not sure weather it will see the light of the day for some time now. Because along with the Earth day unit, I also got some ideas for 'Mothers Day' and 'Back to school'. But the good news is that it didn't take me too long to put everything together for the Earth day unit and I completed it with full focus.So maybe I mustn't worry too much about ADD!

The unit has posters in color and black and white which you can use for discussion and coloring respectively. 

Print the emergent reader to use during independent reading time or guided reading. Children can color the pictures if they like. On the last page, they can write and draw one thing they would like to do for Planet Earth. Few glimpses of the book:

Valentine's Day Writing Activity!

What is love? It has varied definitions and different people have different perspectives about it. And kids are not far behind. Even at this tender age they can come up with their own idea of love.

Few years ago, I had asked this question to my class and was amazed by the responses. The sweet munchkins gave such cute replies that I was floored. For one boy love was going on a boat with his family and for another it was kissing his mom. Some kids associated love with sharing and helping others, while some said it was about receiving and giving gifts. One sweet girl said, " she feels loved when her friends played with her."

I noted all their responses on a heart shape and displayed it in the hall. And boy oh boy! we got a lot of compliments for our sweet thoughts.

This valentine's you can ask children to draw what they feel about love and if they are a little older, ask them to write their thoughts.

Valentine's Day Emergent Reader

Valentines day is around the corner and its a great day to talk about love that children share with their parents, feel for their grandparents, friends, teachers, siblings and other important people in their lives.

And since children spend a lot of time with their families at this young age, its best to start with a discussion about their families. I created a simple emergent reader with repetitive text for young readers. It focuses on sight words: 'I', 'My' and 'Love'.

Read it aloud to children and give them individual copies to read on their own. 

The books come in black and white and colored versions. They can fill color in the black and white version.

You can use this book for guided reading or simply place it in your literacy centers.

Republic Day- Soldier Emergent Reader

Republic day is also a day to remember our brave soldiers who laid their lives for our country. I love using this day to talk about our veterans with little children. I created a very simple book which you can use to initiate a discussion in your class.

You can follow up with a soldier craft. Give them cutouts to assemble and let them sponge paint with green and brown paint.

Brainstorm the characteristics of a soldier with children and record their answers. 

All these activities will definitely make your kids proud of our soldiers and help them understand the sacrifice the soldiers make to keep us and our country safe.

Santa Claus and sight word-see

Its Christmas time again! Time to spread cheer and joy and indulge in lots of sweet goodies :)

Well i really don't need the excuse of Christmas to indulge in sweet treats but nonetheless.

This is the best time of year not just from the "sweets" perspective but also because each day at school is full of fun. Thanks to all the Christmas related activities, games and crafts that a teacher can plan during this time. 

I did exactly that and spiced up the sight word-see with some Santa magic.

I made an emergent reader called 'Santa, Santa, what do you see?' based on the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see?" by Eric Carle. I threw in Christmas related words and the repetitive text made it easier for children to get acquainted with the the word-see. 

I made copies of the book and children did shared reading.

The sentence strips were read together during whole group time and it helped in reinforcing the word.

After children explored the word, we made a Santa craft and children wrote what their Santa sees.

It gave them practice of writing the word and they got to express themselves creatively.
